THINGS TO DO

Excursions / Interests

Beaches

Where the land meets the sea, 12km of crystalline, blue water blend seamlessly with the sky. An endless expanse of clean white sand invites you to take long walks along the seashore. On the other side, 624 hectares (1542 acres) of sand dunes rise up like ramparts in the landscape. This is Nature in its purest form. In Winter or Summer the beaches of Herdade da Comporta are the ultimate escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Along the coast there are 3 beaches classified as bathing beaches – Comporta beach, Pego beach and Carvalhal beach. They are all environmentally certified and have Blue Flag and Accessible Beach quality seals enabling people with reduced mobility to enjoy the pleasures of beach life.

Restaurants

Thanks to the region’s location and its wealth of cultural influences Herdade da Comporta is also an excellent place for fine dining. You can taste the best that the land and sea have to offer at a number of high quality restaurants. For lunch spots there are a few restaurants on the nearby beaches (Comporta Café on Comporta beach, O’Dinis on Carvalhal beach, Sal on Pego beach). For dinner, restaurants such as Cavalarica, Museo do Arroz, and Dona Bia are recommended, as well as Hotel Sublime's Celeiro restaurant in Muda, a 10 minute drive away. There are supermarkets in Comporta, Carvalhal and Grandola. There is also a seafood shop in Carrasquiera and a big food market accessible by ferry in Setubal.

Roman Ruins

The Roman ruins of Troia, built between the 1st and 5th century AD, took advantage of the Atlantic's abundance of fish and the richness of the salt from the shores of Sado. The most characteristic component of the Roman workshops are the salting tanks where fish sauce was prepared and preserved. The ruins are located in a strip of sand between the Sado estuary and the Caldeira lagoon.
