Annabel loves Villa Eygalieres for its location right in the centre of such a pretty provencal village.
Perched on top of a small hill, away from all noisy traffic, Eygalières is a medieval village which smiles down on acres of olive trees, almond blossoms, lavender fields and the famous Van Gogh purple irises. The Alpilles are home to the ancient resting places of the Knights Templar, pilgrims on the Route De Compostela, the Chateau of the Maquis de Sade and more recently the headquarters of the famous French Resistance fighter, Jean Moulin. From the once majestic chateau tower, one can stroll through the village, meandering past the centuries old Campanile that rings out the hour, the original hospital of 1672, and the old church, stopping at the Boulangerie for a croissant or tart and finally arriving at the atmospheric Café de La Place for a coffee or Pastis.
The Eygaliereois are passionate about protecting their Provencale heritage. The village is host to many festivals in the spring and summer. The Fete de la Musique in June, Paella night in July and the week long Fete de St Laurent which sees running of the bulls in the day and dancing in the street in the evening.Fridays host the lively weekly market with its fresh local produce, flowers, clothes and gifts.
Eygalieres is an ideal base from which to explore the famous towns of Avignon with its Papal Palace, Orange and Arles with their almost intact Roman Amphitheatre and Arena, Aix en Provence with its beautiful fountains, museums, art galleries and designer lifestyle shops and Marseille with its fabulous beaches and atmospheric old port. It is 30 minutes from the Luberon villages. The world famous Calanques are accessible by boat from either Marseilles or Cassis.
